WWII USAAF 492nd Bomb Group “Carpetbaggers”

Named EM Tunic dated 1942, fully badged, Shirt, Tie and EM Cap. Tunic has a sterling silver pin back Gunners Wing on a blue combat backing over a three piece medal bar, 8th Air Force English made patch to the left sleeve, US and Aviation branch collar badges, Presidential Unit citation pin back to the right breast with an Honourable Discharge badge above, the the lower left sleeve is an Engineer specialist patch with Sargeant a stripe the both sleeves. In good condition with age and service wear. Also an Enlisted Cap by Lewis “Fly Weghter” in a size 7 1/4” In worn and shaped condition. Also issue shirt with 8th AF patch and tan tie. Good scarce grouping.

With black-painted aircraft configured with engine flame dampeners and optimized for night operations, the group operated chiefly over southern France with B-24's and C-47's, transporting agents, supplies, and propaganda leaflets to patriots. Flew its last Carpetbagger mission in April 1945 and then ferried personnel and equipment to and from the Continent until July.
